Angels Watching Over You, Inc., a holistic homecare company providing personal care, support, and assistance to the elderly, has spent 15 years fine tuning its homecare services and is now considered a major referral source for the senior population and their families in the greater Waterbury area.
The Watertown business, with a one-year-old branch in Fairfield County, continues to focus on its original mission of addressing the special needs of the elderly on a one-to-one basis. Angels Watching Over You draws on a network of professionals and paraprofessionals that include registered nurses, certified nurse's aides, companions, homemakers, live-ins and massage therapists, to name a few.
With the growing experience, knowledge and credentials of the staff, the Angels Watching Over You team finds itself answering an increasing number of questions and providing more guidance on a variety of issues affecting seniors. Having recently completed comprehensive training and earning the designation of Certified Senior Advisor (CSA), Taccardi says, The CSA training and being a member of the Society of Certified Senior Advisors is another resource that equips me to better serve the elderly population. The CSA certification includes education on health, financial and social resources for seniors.
Keeping abreast of Medicare, Medicaid and other senior services, the staff at Angels Watching Over You already spends a considerable amount of time on the phone guiding people in the right direction, according to Office Manager Kim Magalhaes. Helping the public is something they do with great pride as they carry out their daily responsibilities of matching clients with an appropriate caregiver or service provider. Angels Watching Over You has a pool of about 70 service providers in greater Waterbury and 25 in Fairfield County, ranging in age from 22 to 82, who provide various levels of care and companionship for those needing help at home and in hospitals, assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
Director Ellen White, RN, who has 25 years of experience in homecare, is in charge of assessing a client's needs and gathering extensive background information to help determine which care provider would be the best match for each situation. For instance, sometimes a more mature person is appropriate when the primary need is companionship, while a nursing student could provide more skilled care. All care providers are thoroughly screened and must supply several references. A skills test is given to determine the level of expertise a care provider possesses.
White says the demand for services is clearly evident. Since she came to Angels Watching Over You 5 years ago, she has seen the number of cases per month increase by 400 percent. Cases range from short-term to long-term needs, varying from a 4-hour minimum to a live-in status in a person's home, which is a rising trend. Requests are as varied as the individual's needs. For example, Angels Watching Over You provided an aide to accompany a client to a wedding and tend to his personal needs so the client's family could more easily enjoy the wedding. Providing companionship and a watchful eye for patients undergoing one-day surgery is another type of common short-term care.
We take a personal interest in the families and matching the client with just the right care provider, asking the pertinent questions, said Magalhaes. We try to make the process as simple as possible for the clients and their families. Knowing our pool of workers as well as we do also allows us to respond quickly to urgent requests.
"I want people to think of Angels Watching Over You as the go-to company when they have questions or needs for any area of care dealing with the elderly," said Taccardi. Being a referral source is something that has been evolving from Taccardi's original reason for starting the business: to assist the elderly. "My goal is to help people," she said, "I was following my heart long before I was following a business plan." Taccardi's success was recently recognized by Strathmore's Who's Who, a registry and global network for outstanding professionals. Taccardi is active in the community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Watertown/Oakville Chamber of Commerce, the Waterbury Regional Chamber Health Care Council and the Business Women's Forum, as well as a number of other organizations. Taccardi said, "Serving on numerous boards and committees provides me the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally, which, in turn, makes me a better resource within my community."
